Humility and Sacrifice: The Eternal Legacy of Shri Ram and Maa Sita
Many people regard Prabhu Shri Ram as an ideal king, and his method of ruling was cherished by everyone of that time. His way of governance remains relevant even today, as people refer to it as the "Ram Rajya." However, there are a few individuals who question Shri Ram's actions in certain aspects, one of which is the decision to expel Maa Sita from the kingdom and into the jungle while she was pregnant.
Allow me to decode this question here. Those who question Shri Ram's behavior in this matter likely haven't delved deeply into the Ramayan. To understand this situation, it's crucial to first acquaint oneself with his early life circumstances.
From his childhood, he displayed remarkably polite and humble behavior, endearing him to all, including his brothers. Due to Shri Ram's popularity, his father Dasharath decided to pass on the kingdom to him. The entire kingdom rejoiced, anticipating Shri Ram's imminent ascension to the throne. However, there existed someone who opposed Ram's kingship.
Maa Kaykayi, influenced wrongly by her attendant, sought to crown her son Bharat as king and banish Ram from the kingdom for 14 years. Dasharath, bowing to Kaykayi's demand, reluctantly instructed Ram to venture into the forest for this extended period. Despite the heavy weight in his heart, Ram accepted his fate unquestioningly. The kingdom's people were shaken by this unexpected event. Ram approached Sita, expressing his intention to escort her to her mother's abode before embarking on his forest exile. Yet, Sita, resolute, declared her intention to accompany him wherever he went. Ram, concerned for Sita's well-being, reasoned that the forest was not a suitable place for a queen. He didn't wish for her to suffer on his account, but Sita insisted she was prepared for whatever challenges life might bring.
Ram's brother Lakshman reacted with fury upon hearing the news, directing his anger towards their father. Ram, however, calmed Lakshman, urging him not to shout at their father. In a poignant exchange, Lakshman offered to accompany them, considering the difficulties of the dark jungle. After persistent pleas, Ram consented.
When Bharat learned of these events, he too condemned his mother Kaykayi's actions and vowed never to set eyes on her again. He ruled the kingdom with Ram's Paduka (footwear) on the throne, while he himself resided in a modest hut below the town.
After the episode involving Sita's abduction and Ravana's defeat, Ram, Sita, and Lakshman were prepared to return to the kingdom after the designated 14 years. The populace welcomed them with open arms, and joy pervaded the land. Yet, unbeknownst to them, destiny still tested Shri Ram and Maa Sita's patience.
News of Maa Sita's pregnancy spread, but some individuals in the city began spreading malicious rumors about her. This led to a disregard for rules and regulations within the kingdom. Ram found himself deeply troubled, grappling with how to restore faith in Sita's purity. Sita, in a bold move, agreed to undergo a fire test in the presence of all. Shockingly, even after this ordeal, certain people persisted in doubting her innocence.
Observing distressing situation and unwilling to witness Ram's anguish, Sita made a heart-wrenching decision. She proclaimed that if her destiny dictated a life in the forest, she would willingly return to forest again. In this situation what options were available for Ram: Number one - as a king, he could have forcefully quashed the dissenting voices, put people in jail or kill them, to safeguard Sita's honor, or he could have chosen, as he did, to place his personal interests beneath his duty as a ruler (Rajdharma). As a king he kept his personal life below the Rajdharma, sacrificed his personal interest, and did the things which is required as a Rajdharma. Whats the point in ruling when people don't have trust on King and Queen.
When Sita was sent into the forest once more, Ram endured immense inner turmoil. Each moment was spent pondering Sita's well-being, his responsibilities as king taking precedence. He chose not to marry another princess, remaining faithful to his promise to Sita. He knew that the day would come when people would realize their mistake in doubting Maa Sita's purity.
During the Lav Kush episode, Sita underwent the agni test once again, though this time her heart was shattered. In a poignant plea, Sita beseeched Mother Earth (Dharti Maa) to take her inside if she was indeed pure. The ground trembled, and dharti Maa came out revealing her purity to all. All the people who questioned her purity started apolizing for their mistake. However, Sita, resolute, chose to depart. She implored Ram to forgive the people and spare them from punishment before vanishing into the earth.
The core focus of this narrative is to exemplify instances where Ram and Sita willingly sacrificed their personal desires, illustrating how humility can be maintained even in challenging circumstances.
